Training GP Lead (3 month contract - £500-600 p/d)
Build and lead Asterix’s accreditation programme for internationally trained GPs, teach and assess the first cohort, and help expand access to primary care across the UK.
The project at a glance
Day rate: £500-£600 per day
Length: 3 months engagement (2 days a week).
Location: London office in Shoreditch / Old Street - 1 day a week onsite with team.
Beyond the project: If the project goes well, there is an option for this contract to become a full-time role leading accreditation as the programme scales.
Why Asterix exists
There aren't enough GPs in the UK. Millions of patients can't get a GP appointment, millions more are stuck on hospital waiting lists, and preventable conditions go unmanaged. It was never good enough.
Asterix is pioneering a new model: qualified international doctors working remotely as part of UK GP practices’ own teams. We’re the only company in the UK approved to operate this model under new regulations.
We’re also building DoctorOS, a platform which takes on the work that keeps GPs away from patients, such as filing lab results and processing documents. That frees our doctors to focus on clinical decisions and get through significantly more work than traditional GPs.
We work with some of the largest GP practices in the country, covering over 430,000 patients.
Why this project
Today every Asterix doctor is a UK-trained GP who has moved abroad. That limits us to around 500 doctors.
Accrediting fully qualified family doctors who trained outside the UK would open the pool to thousands. To do that safely and efficiently, we need a programme which regulators and partner practices trust. Nobody has built one yet. This project is to develop, lead and implement the first version, and prove it with a first cohort.
What you'll build
The accreditation programme
A structured induction: what a doctor needs to know and be able to do before going live (clinical standards, the NHS and the UK GP role, labs and documents workflows), and in what order.
The curriculum, case packs and test-patient banks the delivery team will use to teach and assess each cohort.
Clinical ownership of the first cohort's teaching: live clinical sessions, 1:1 case reviews, exam feedback and remediation.
Assessment and sign-off
An assessment framework: baseline, labs exam, AKT- and SJT-style exams and a practical workflow sign-off, calibrated against our own UK-trained GPs, with pass marks set by a GP panel.
Stringent pass/fail criteria to ensure clinical excellence amongst our workforce, and go-live decisions for the first cohort: who goes live, who resits and who is not signed off, escalating to the Medical Director where needed.
Support for each doctor in building their own professional portfolio, so they can meet their Responsible Officer's sign-off requirements, and a documented process so this can run at scale.
The learning platform specification
A specification for the online platform that will deliver accreditation: the modules, case banks and assessments doctors work through remotely, so the programme isn't limited by in-person teaching hours.
Review of what the delivery team builds against that specification, with changes fed back from the first cohort.
Milestones
Month 1: Induction and assessment framework designed and agreed with the Medical Director.
Month 2: Curriculum, case packs, test-patient banks and exams written, pass marks set with the GP panel, and the platform specification agreed with the delivery team.
Month 3: First cohort taught and assessed, go-live decisions made, and each doctor supported to complete their professional portfolio for Responsible Officer sign-off.
What success looks like
By the end of the project:
The induction, curriculum and assessments are signed off by the Medical Director and ready to run again without rework.
Every doctor in the first cohort has a clear outcome: live, resit or not signed off.
Each doctor who passed has a professional portfolio that meets their Responsible Officer's sign-off requirements.
Who you'll work with
You'll report to Max (Co-founder & COO). You'll work closely with:
Dr Harriet Bradley (Medical Director) on clinical standards, governance and sign-off. Harriet was Medical Director at Livi, where she led the clinical team as it scaled to 11 million patients and became the first telehealth provider rated Outstanding by the CQC, and then largest GP practice in the country, growing it from 80,000 to over 120,000 patients.
Prof Mike Bewick (Strategic Medical Lead) on the GP accreditation programme and NHS England. Mike was Deputy National Medical Director at NHS England, responsible for primary care nationally, and led the implementation of the Responsible Officer and revalidation programme, which is the framework this role's sign-offs feed into.
Dr Aswin (Associate Medical Director), who runs audit and quality assurance across all our doctors, and will do the same for the doctors you accredit
Jamil (Delivery Operations Manager) on scheduling, training accounts, smartcards and NHSE forms
Together they bring deep expertise in clinical governance, medical education and NHS primary care for you to draw on.
Who you are
We care about what you've done and how you think, not your job title.
You'll be a great fit if you:
Have 3+ years' experience as a GP in the UK, and are GMC-registered, on the Performers List and in good standing.
Have taught, supervised or assessed doctors. You might hold a PGCert in Medical Education, be a GP Trainer, have completed a fellowship in medical education, lectured in primary care at a university, worked as an appraiser or examiner, or built an induction or training pathway.
Are comfortable working within an early-stage startup and willing to roll up your sleeves and support wherever needed.
Nice to have:
Technical expertise in education technology or medical education: you've built online courses, e-learning modules or assessment tools, or worked with a product team to do so.
Experience supporting International Medical Graduates (IMGs) or doctors new to the NHS.
Culture: the Asterix way
Humble. We assume we might be wrong until the data or a clinician shows otherwise. We ask questions and help each other improve.
Founder mentality. You work independently and push problems to resolution, and you know when to ask for help, for example when something needs clinical sign-off.
Joyful energy. We take the work seriously, not ourselves. We celebrate wins and back each other completely.
In person by design. We work side by side in London. It makes us faster and the journey more fun.
Why join now
Because this is the moment your work shapes everything that comes after. On this project you'll:
Define the clinical standard for our workforce model, featured in the NHS 10 Year Plan.
Build the accreditation pathway from the start.
Work directly with our founders, Medical Director and Strategic Medical Lead.
If the project goes well, we'd like it to become a full-time role leading accreditation as the programme scales to more sites and more doctors.
If you've trained and assessed doctors and want to build the pathway that opens NHS primary care to thousands more of them, we'd love to hear from you.
